James Harjo 1942-2017

 

Herbert “James” Harjo, 75, Mayetta, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, at his home on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation.

He was born July 23, 1942, in Hanna, Okla., the son of Charley and Mary Foster Harjo.

Mr. Harjo was a roofer and self-employed contractor who worked for various construction companies.

He was a member of the Musco­gee (Creek) Nation and Muscogee Creek Ceremonial.

He married Velma Wahwasuck on Sept. 10, 2001, in Reno, Nev. She survives.

Other survivors include four sons, Victor Harjo, Tecumseh, Okla., Danny Harjo and Herbert James Harjo Jr., both of Tulsa, Okla., and Kevin Harjo, Morris, Okla.; two sisters, Geraldine Dunn, Okmulgee, Okla., and Mary Wood, Shawnee, Okla.; and many grand­children. He was preceded in death by a sister, Retna Harjo; and a brother, Phillip Harjo.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. A wake will follow at Mr. Harjo’s home in Mayetta. Family will conduct a sunrise burial in the Wahwasuck Cemetery on the Prairie Band Reservation.
