John Hayden “Jack” Barnes, 86, Newton, died Friday, Feb. 12, 2016.

He was born March 22, 1929, in Holton, the son of Clarence Russell and Vera Aileen Barnes. He gradu­ated in 1951 from Kansas State College with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture and partici­pated in Army ROTC, graduating as a Second Lieutenant.

Mr. Barnes was trained at Offi­cer’s Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., after graduation, and then stationed at Fort Riley before he was was assigned to the 28th Infantry Division in Augsburg, Germany in 1952. He remained in the Army Reserves until 1959.

He started his career in 1953 as the Brown County Extension 4-H Agent before moving in 1959 with his family to Newton, where he took the position of 4-H Agent for Harvey County. In Harvey County he held the positions of 4-H Agent, Agricultural Agent and Director of Extension Services until retiring in 1989.

He and his wife were founders and charter members of Trinity Heights Methodist Church in 1962, and he was a member of the Trinity Heights choir from its inception until 2012. He also headed numer­ous Extension crop, livestock and 4-H committees, as well as man­aging the Harvey County Fair for several years. He was also a mem­ber of the Newton Kiwanis Club and American Legion Post 2.

He married Alma Jeanne on Dec. 25, 1951, in Netawaka. She died Oct. 12, 2008. He also was pre­ceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include four sons, Gregg, John, Bruce and Robert; a brother, Joseph and wife Annette; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton, with the Rev. Donna Votoau presiding. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home in New­ton with family receiving friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Holton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Heights United Methodist Church Music Depart­ment, sent in care of Petersen Fu­neral Home in Newton.
