Isla Mae Vogel 1922-2020

Isla Mae Gates Vogel, 98, Topeka, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2020, at her home with family by her side.

She was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Havensville, the daughter of Ora Alpheus and Isla Victoria Goodman Graves. She graduated from Wheaton High School in 1942, then attended NYA trade school in Topeka.

Ms. Vogel worked in Portland, Ore., in the early 1940s as a secretary at shipyards. She lived in Topeka since 1948, working at National Reserve Life Insurance Company and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. She worked at H&R Block for 10 years, at Floyd’s Daylight Donuts for 20 years and at Bakers Dozen for six years. She also worked at Lane Street Station and helped her son Craig at Sneakers Night Club for a few years.

She was a member of the Congregational Church in Wheaton, serving as secretary in the 1940s. She was also a member of multiple bowling leagues in Topeka.

She married Robert Gene Jacobs. They divorced. She married Kenneth Dean Gates. They divorced. She married Henry “Hank” Daniel Vogel. They divorced.

Survivors include three sons, Craig Gates and wife Catherine, Topeka, Roy Gates, Huntsville, Texas, and Ronnie Gates, Topeka; a brother-in-law, L.D. Sloop, Holton; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Sloop; a brother, Ora “Dale” Graves; and a sister-in-law, Lorna Mae Graves.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in Wheaton Cemetery.
