Helen McDaniel 1938-2022

Helen Rose Ann (Smallfield) McDaniel, 84, of Holton, passed away Friday, Nov. 25, 2022, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka.

She was born April 20, 1938, in Flandreau, S.D., the daughter of Otto William and Beatrice Lenora (Winklewitsch) Smallfield.

Helen graduated from Flandreau High School in 1956 in Flandreau, S.D. She graduated from cosmetology college in Sioux Falls, S.D. Helen was a homemaker and housewife.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the quilting club at the church, OES 320, V.F.W. Post 400 Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary.

Helen married James Dean “J.D.” McDaniel on Nov. 25, 1961, in Enid, Okla. He preceded her in death on June 10, 2006, after 44 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Beatrice Smallfield, and a brother, John Smallfield.

Survivors include her two sons, Robert McDaniel (Nora) of Sioux Falls, S.D., and William McDaniel of Topeka; three daughters, Dawn Baldwin (Lonnie) of Topeka, Sally Beckwith of Topeka and Amie McDaniel of Haysville; a brother, Delbert Smallfield (Florence) of Bloomington, Minn.; five sisters, Virgene Bullis of Knoxville, Iowa, Frances Smallfield of Palm Desert, Calif., Karen Johnson (Raymond) of Hephzibah, Ga., Beverly Jones of Lake Madison, S.D., and Dorothy Leraas of Brookins, S.D.,; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Holton. Burial will follow in Holton Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mercer Funeral Home.
