George Cochren 1922-2020
George H. Cochren, 98, of Holton, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2020, at Medicalodges Jackson County.
He was born Feb. 9, 1922, in Wetmore, the son of John H. and Lena (Wegman) Cochren.
George had lived in Holton since 1963 and previously in Netawaka and Whiting. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for the Department of Transportation at the State of Kansas for more than 26 years. He was also a farmer and stockman.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, American Legion Post 44 and V.F.W Post 1367, all in Holton.
George married Zola “Joyce” Plankington on Nov. 8, 1986 in Holton. She preceded him in death on Jan. 13, 1996. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Martha Rogers; and a brother, the Rev. John “Tell” Cochren.
Survivors include a cousin, Aletha William of Holton; a cousin and caregiver, Connie Bontrager (Roger) of Holton; a sister-in-law, Donna Pearl Christie; three nieces, Marie Cochren, Judy Stoner (Darrell) and Sally Cochren; and two nephews, Bill Rogers (Kathie) and John Rogers (Beabea).
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 28 in Netawaka Cemetery. George will lie in state until noon on Thursday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
