Gene Schiefelbein 1953-2021

Eugene “Gene” Schiefelbein Jr., 67, Mayetta, died Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born Aug. 23, 1953, in Topeka, the son of Eugene and Dorothy Haupt Schiefelbein. He graduated from Highland Park High School in Topeka.

Mr. Schiefelbein worked at Lardner Monument Company and as a custodian at Hayden High School, both in Topeka.

He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church at Holton and Holton Knights of Columbus Council 4219. He was also a member of the Marianist Group at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta and a former member of the Glory To God Covenant Community in Topeka.

He married Maggie Duniven on Oct. 25, 2003, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Brad Schiefelbein, New York, N.Y.; two daughters, Laura Cote, in Florida, and Misty Vigneron, in Kansas; a stepson, David Duniven, Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Dan Schiefelbein and wife Leda and Chris Schiefelbein, all of Topeka; a sister, Kathy Wood and husband Chuck, Olathe; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sharon Schiefelbein; and many aunts and uncles.

A rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 22 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. A memorial mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton. The committal service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Calvary Mausoleum in Topeka.
