Gene Scheid 1931-2016
Ronald E. “Gene” Scheid, 84, Hiawatha, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha.
He was born Oct. 7, 1931, in Netawaka, the son of Alfred and Lillie Dean Chiles Scheid. He attended Lawn Ridge and Whiting grade schools and graduated in 1949 from Whiting High School.
Mr. Scheid served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War, aboard the U.S.S. Binkley Bass from June 1952 to November 1955. He later worked for Nabisco Brands Inc. in Topeka and St. Louis, Mo., for nearly 28 years, then returned to Hiawatha in September 1983 and worked at Casselman Meek Funeral Home for several years. He also served as a deputy treasurer for Brown County, retiring in February 1987.
He was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ in Hiawatha and a member of VFW Post 5210 of Hiawatha.
He married Beulah Grace Salsberry on April 27, 1957, in Whiting. She died June 26, 1980. He married Ramona Leffert Brammer on Nov. 20, 1982, in Hiawatha. She died Nov. 30, 2003. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marlene K. Burroughs, on July 26, 1997; and a stepson, Randel J. Colvin, on Oct. 19, 1988.
Survivors include a brother, Delbert J. Scheid and wife Agnes, Hot Springs Village, Ark.; two grandchildren, Larry Fitzgerald and wife Jessica, Boynton Beach, Fla., and Lisa M. Cole and husband Jason, Seattle, Wash.; a stepson, Rod Colvin, Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Aiden, Riley, Aubrey and Lila; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethany United Church of Christ in Hiawatha, with Pastor Shane Spangler officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, Whiting, with military honors courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Scheid will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church, where family will meet with friends one hour prior to services.
