Gene Durham 1931-2017
Eugene “Gene” Durham, Sr., 85, Corning, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Midland Hospice House surrounded by his loving family.
Gene was born Oct. 4, 1931, in Emmett, the son of Pete and Elsie Mae (Malloy) Durham. He attended Holton High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952, serving during the Korean War.
He was employed at Goodyear for more than 40 years, retiring in 1991.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, liked nothing better than a game of Spicy Farkle and was an avid K-State fan.
He was a member of American Legion Post 400, VFW and Moose Lodge 555.
Gene married Peggy Ann Woodworth on March 8, 1952. She died May 19, 1976.
Survivors include his companion, Kate Hiltibrand, Corning; daughters, Bobbi (Jerry) Harvey, Debi (Randy) Stark and Sandy (Chuck) Hanshaw, all of Topeka; sons, Gene (Rosalinda) Durham Jr. and Jim Durham, all of Seattle, Wash.; 26 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; a sister, Smoky Hamlin, Topeka; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Durham; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Ingenthron; a brother, Charles Durham; and sisters, Leona (Faye) Sisson and Peggy Ann Spalding.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 29 at Mount Hope Cemetery and Funeral Chapel. Inurnment services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 31 in the Corning Cemetery in Corning.
