Galen Hubbard 1945-2023

Galen E. “Sal” Hubbard, Na ga ha, 77, Horton, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2023, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka.

He was born Nov. 3, 1945, in Topeka, the son of Chester and Mary Laclair Hubbard. He graduated from Netawaka High School and from Haskell Business School.

Mr. Hubbard was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Vietnam.

He was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and the Seneca Tribe. He was also a member of We-Ta-Se American Legion Post 410 at Mayetta and a member of the Christian faith.

He was superintendent of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Horton Agency, retiring in January of 2008.

He married Sue Samuel on May 28, 1965, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Sean Hubbard and wife Robin, Carbondale, and Duane Hubbard, Topeka; two daughters, Galenna Nelson and husband Darrin, Topeka, and Miriam Hubbard and husband Mark, Horton; a sister, Antoinette Smith, in Ohio; three brothers, Clifford Hubbard, Kansas City, and Robert Hubbard and Hardy Eteeyan, both of Mayetta; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Delmar Hubbard; and a sister, Mayme Mattwaoshshe.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with military honors will follow in Shipshee Cemetery west of Mayetta. Mr. Hubbard will lie in state after 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where a visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
