Florence Rutland 1934-2020

Florence J. Rutland, 86, Robinson, died Monday Aug. 10, 2020, at Midland Hospice in Topeka.

She was born April 17, 1934, in Ft. Collins, Colo., the daughter of Frank Thomas and Laveena Catherine Hosier Nockhold. She attended Englewood High School in Englewood, Colo., and later earned her GED. She moved to Kansas in 1976 and moved from Holton to Hiawatha in 1982, then to Robinson before moving to Maple Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in 2013.

Mrs. Rutland worked as a housekeeper in nursing homes and hospitals and worked at Flair Fold in Hiawatha for seven years.

She attended First Christian Church in Hiawatha.

She married Lawrence Richard Garman on June 6, 1952, in Littleton, Colo. They divorced. She married Harold Rutland on Dec. 20, 1992, in Hiawatha. He died March 14, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three children who died in infancy; and five siblings.

Survivors include five children, Glenn Garman, Norman Garman, Ollie Sample, Mark Garman and Brenda Garman; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Nix and Dora Keffer.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha. Mrs. Rutland will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.
