Evie Hopkins 1941-2020

Evelyn “Evie” “Byed Wedmokwe” Kelty Hopkins, 79, Mayetta, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020, at her home.

She was born May 5, 1941, in Tomahawk, Wisc., the daughter of Garnett Potts and Lillian Kelty. She attended high school in Tomahawk and later obtained her degree in Canada as a drug and alcohol counselor.

Evie had worked at Rainbow Casino in Nekoosa, Wisc., for 11 years, was a drug and alcohol counselor at PARR House for seven years and most recently for Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribal Gaming Commission as a gaming inspector from February 2011 until the present day.

She married William Hopkins. He preceded her in death in 1991. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Rosemond Tecumseh; two brothers, Ralph “Porky” Tecumseh and Byron J. “BJ” Darnall; and a grandson, Nigel Hopkins.

Survivors include her children, Carla Youngbear, Tama, Iowa, Bill Hopkins Sr., Darrick Hopkins, Ronnie Hopkins and Tony Hopkins and wife Lana, all of Moraviantown, Ontario, Canada, Paula Hopkins, Scott Hopkins and wife Kelly and Cheryl Hopkins, all of Mayetta, and Sheila Eichinger and husband Tom, Olathe; her sisters, Yvonne Kelty, Black River Falls, Wisc., and Alice Potts, Rose Potts and Micki Martinez, all of Mayetta; her brothers, Ronald Kelty, Lac Du Flambeau, Wisc., and Myron “Jim” Potts and Benny J. Potts, both of Mayetta; 31 grandchildren; and 49 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hopkins will lie in state at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, beginning Thursday, Oct. 15 until 6:30 p.m., through Saturday, Oct. 17 until noon. Private services will be held at a later date.
