Elsie Polson 1930-2022

Elsie Polson, 91, of Hoyt, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

She was born July 29, 1930, in Eldon, Iowa, the daughter of Olen and Alice Trowbridge Gardner. She graduated from Blakesburg High School in Blakesburg, Iowa, in 1949.

Elsie had worked for a pre-fabrication housing manufacturer where she did plumbing, heating and electrical work. She had also worked in restaurants and was a farm wife. After moving to Holton in 2001 she had worked at the Holton Walmart. She moved from Holton to Hoyt several years ago.

Elsie’s passion was helping veterans. She was a member of the Auxiliaries to Holton VFW Memorial Post No. 1367, American Legion Post No. 83, in Iowa, and the Disabled American Veterans, Unit No. 18, in Iowa. She also did volunteer work for the Veteran’s Administration, having volunteered more than 5,000 hours, and was very active with Toys for Tots.

Elsie married Emery E. Polson on Jan. 28, 1950, in Albia, Iowa. He preceded her in death on July 14, 1985.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.

Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Brown (Wayne), Hedrick, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and her family by heart, the Janice and Junior Schweigen family.

A Celebration of Elsie’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Holton Vets Club. There will be a dinner following the service. Inurnment will be held later in Brook Cemetery at Hedrick, Iowa.
