Ellsworth Hewitt 1942-2017
Ellsworth Joy Hewitt, 75, departed this life at his home in Circleville on Dec. 6, 2017, surrounded by loved ones.
He was born Feb. 8, 1942, in Sabetha, to Donald and Eleanor (Meyer) Hewitt.
Ellsworth grew up in the Oneida area in Nemaha County on his parents’ farm. He attended school in Oneida and graduated from Bern High School in 1960. After high school he joined the Kansas Army National Guard and served as a Cannon Crewmember in the 130th Field Artillery. He was called to active duty with the 69th Infantry Brigade (Mechanized) in support of the Vietnam War and was stationed at Fort Carson, Colo., until 1969, when he was released from the service.
Ellsworth married Sandra Kooser on March 29, 1964, at the Oneida Methodist Church in Oneida. She survives.
As a youngster, Ellsworth enjoyed listening to westerns on the radio and decided that he wanted to be a cowboy when he grew up. This led to numerous farm animals being broke to ride and began a lifetime love of cowboy life. As a young man, he participated in bareback riding at local rodeos and later became a saddle bronc rider while working for several rodeo stock contractors. He worked in a feed lot in Nebraska before moving his family in 1975 to Maple Hill, where he was employed with Adams Cattle Company for the next 32 years before retiring in 2007. Ellsworth and Sandra moved to Circleville upon his retirement.
Preceding him in death were his father and grandparents. Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Eleanor of Sabetha; his sons and their wives, Patrick and Vicky, Phillipsburg, Michael and Melinda, rural Circleville, Richard and Sally, Prosser, Wash., and Scott and Tracee, rural Soldier; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m. at the Circleville Christian Church, Circleville with Pastor Brody Bliss officiating. Private burial is planned at a later time.
Family visitation will be from 3 p.m. to service time at the church. There will be no viewing as cremation was chosen.
Memorial contributions may be made in Ellsworth’s name to charities of the donor’s choice.
