Ellen Schirmer (1928-2022)

Ellen Louise Schirmer, 94, of Holton, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022, at Medicalodges Jackson County. She was born March 17, 1928, in Menlo, the daughter of Harry Leslie and Edna (Dean) Hoppas.

Ellen graduated from Menlo High School in 1946. She attended two years at Kansas State University and earned her bachelor’s degree in Education in 1971 at Washburn University.

She was a teacher at Holton Middle School and Holton High School for 21 years. Ellen also sold real estate for Kellerman Real Estate for five years and was a county commissioner for four years, representing Jackson County’s Second District.

Ellen was a member of Evangel United Methodist Church, Chapter PEO, Kings Daughters Sunday School Class, Banner Creek Science Center, volunteered for Holton Senior Citizens Center and was selected for the Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame in 2018.

She married David Eugene Schirmer on Aug. 26, 1948, in Colby. He preceded her in death on Sept. 17, 2005, after 57 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Edna Hoppas; a son, Charles S. Schirmer, and a brother, Charles D. Hoppas.

Survivors include a son, Henry D. Schirmer (Charlotte) of Holton, a daughter, Mary Ellen Estrada of Topeka, a daughter-in-law, Susan Schirmer of Holton, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Holton Cemetery.
