Elizabeth Mapes 1944-2016
Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Mapes, 71, Burlington, died Monday, Feb. 29, 2016, at her home.
She was born June 19, 1944, in Denver, Colo., the daughter of Edward and Marjorie Lundy Mewhinney. She grew up in Kansas and moved to Burlington in 1972.
Mrs. Mapes had owned and operated Liz’s Truck Stop in Burlington in earlier years and had worked in other area restaurants.
She married Clifford Earl Mapes on May 29, 1960, in Kansas City, Mo. He died June 22, 2012. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ernest and Franklin Mewhinney; and a sister, Elsie Grogg.
Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Wing, Soldier, Edith Goucher, Emporia, and Rebecca Tuttle and husband Chad, Burlington; 10 grandchildren; Heather Holt and husband Robert, Donald Wing, Jessica, Alex, and Christopher Vaugh, Amber and Bethany Dunbar, Jamison Nienke and wife Heather, Jacob Nienke and Jared Nienke and wife Jacinda; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward Mewhinney, Girard; and many other relatives.
Cremation is planned. Memorial graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9 at Baker Cemetery west of Burlington. Jones Funeral Home of Burlington is in charge of arrangements.
