Eileen Kling 1920-2022

Eileen Ada Cawood Kling, 101, Hiawatha, died Monday, July 4, 2022.

She was born Aug. 26, 1920, in Palmer, the daughter of Walter F. Cawood and Ada Mae Stiles Cawood. She graduated from Corning High School in 1938 and attended classes at KSU for nursing.

Mrs. Kling worked in various hospitals and clinics through her early career, becoming a licensed practical nurse in 1972. She worked for Dr. Dewitt S. Lowe for several years until his retirement, then worked for Oak Ridge Acres and Maple Heights Nursing Homes in Hiawatha. She and her husband lived in Corning, Topeka, Holton and Goff before moving to Hiawatha in 1959.

She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Falls City, Neb. She was an 80-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She married Ernest Lee Kling on Sept. 28, 1943, in Lyndon. He died Feb. 15, 2011. She also was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Walter Herbert Kling; a grandson, Jeremy Coots; an infant sister, Margaret Cawood; and two sisters, Geraldine Holden and Madelyn Bonte.

Survivors include four children, Nancy Horne and husband Robert, Alta Vista, Melodye Hathaway and husband Roger, Hiawatha, Kent Kling, Ponca City, Okla., and Denise Wolney and husband Jim, Hiawatha; eight grandchildren, LaDonna Flynn and husband Brad, Pittsburg, Scott Horne and wife Lisa, Alta Vista, Bartholomew Kling and wife Lori, Ponca City, Okla., Sabrina Shults and husband James, Greeneville, Tenn., Amanda S. Coots, Atchison, Jillian Darnall and husband Daniel, Glasco, Colby Gilbert, Glasco, and Tess Wolney, Hiawatha; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7 at Bethany United Church of Christ, Hiawatha, with the Rev. Shane Spangler officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wetmore Cemetery. Family will meet with friends one hour prior to services at the church.
