Earl Cordell 1933-2022

Sanford “Earl” Cordell, 89, of Soldier, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022, at Eastridge Nursing Home in Centralia.

He was born June 30, 1933, in Holly, Colo., the son of Sanford “Glenn” and Gladys (Hickman) Cordell.

Earl graduated from Soldier High School in 1951. After high school, Earl served in the U.S. Army from 1954-55. Earl returned home from the Army to work 10 years at Goodyear in Topeka while starting his family’s dairy farm in Soldier, which he and Frances would operate for more than 54 years. 

On Aug. 29, 1952, Earl married his high school sweetheart, Frances Barton, in Holton. They shared more than 62 years of marriage before Frances passed away on Sept. 3, 2014. He was also preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, William LeRoy Cordell; and a twin sister, Beryl Fisher.

Earl is survived by his daughter, Candace Thomas (Bob) of Topeka; three sons, Lynn Cordell (Rita) of Holton, Lyman Cordell (Julie) of Overland Park and Larry Cordell (Jo) of Havensville; two brothers, Lawrence Cordell (Kathy) and Elden Cordell; a sister, Althea Fordman; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15 at Soldier Cemetery. Earl will lie in state at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton on Saturday, Aug. 13 and Sunday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. both days.
