Donald Montgomery 1939-2022

Donald Richard Montgomery, 82, of Soldier, passed away Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 at Medicalodges Jackson County.

He was born Dec. 1, 1939, in Bowling Green, Ky., the son of Gilbert and Stella (Cassidy) Montgomery.

Don proudly served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring after 28 years in 1993, 12 years as active duty and 16 years with Air National Guard. He worked for Goodyear Tire Company for nine and a half years and owned and operated Don’s Auto Service in Mayetta.

Don married Margaret Hurla; they later divorced. He married Anne “Charlene” Roberts on Jan. 5, 1980, in Miami, Okla. They celebrated more than 42 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Montgomery, of the home; five children, Joseph Montgomery (Jerri) of Topeka, Cathy Montgomery of Topeka, Stella Riley (Stan) of Nacogdoches, Texas, William “Billy” Montgomery (Melissa VanDonge) of Topeka and Brandy Montgomery of Holton; three stepchildren, Randy Zule, Lisa Stumpf (Bill) of Mayetta and Tracy Zule (Tiffany) of Soldier; a sister, Amanda, of Kentucky; a brother, Paul Scott, of Kentucky; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Stella Montgomery; two sisters, Margaret and Christine; and three brothers, Bob, Doug and Gilbert Montgomery.

Private family services will be held at a later date.
