Dick Bruns 1933-2019

Richard “Dick” Dale Bruns, 86, of Holton, passed away Friday, Nov. 8, 2019, at The Pines.

He was born June 1, 1933, in Denison, the son of William Wren and Eve Blanche (Williams) Bruns.

Dick graduated from Whiting High School in 1951 and attended two years at K-State. He ran a bulldozer for Delbert Braum of Denison in his earlier years and later worked for Goodyear Tire Company as a tire-builder, retiring after 35 years.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Holton, serving for many years as head usher. He was a former member of the Holton Eagles Club.

Dick married Darlene Gay Christie on March 13, 1954, in Topeka; they celebrated more than 65 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Bruns, of the home; two daughters, Debra Clark (Gene) of Holton and Cynthia Butler (Tim) of Huntersville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Matthew Clark, Christi Schumaker (Samuel), Scott Butler (Neva), Kimberly Clark and Elizabeth Dove (David); and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Weckman; and two brothers, William and Larry Bruns.

In 2005, Dick had a kidney transplant. The kidney was from a 7-year-old boy from Wisconsin, Noah Ziepke. We appreciate the extra years of life he was given from the transplant.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 at First United Methodist Church in Holton. Burial will follow in Holton Cemetery. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time at the church. Richard will lie in state at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton beginning Tuesday afternoon.

Memorial contributions may be given to First United Methodist Church, sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436. To leave a special message for the family, please visit www.mercerfuneralhomes.com
