Debra Wakolee 1955-2019

Debra Ann “Ceezan” Matchie-Wakolee, 64, Hiawatha, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2019, at Maple Heights Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 21, 1955 in Holton, the daughter of Amil and Regina McKinney Matchie. She graduated from Holton High School in 1973 and attended Haskell Junior College and Highland Community College. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Washburn University.

Ms. Wakolee worked as an administrative assistant for the State Office in Washington, D.C., in 1975. She was a financial aid officer for Haskell University and later was an administrative assistant in social work for Kickapoo Reservation and J.O.M. Coordinator for Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation.

She was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and Drum Religion.

She married Richard Wakolee. They divorced.

Survivors include seven children, Heather Matchie and husband Mike, Topeka, Dawn Matchie and husband Skup, Potawatomi Reservation, Valerie Blackbird-Maguire and husband Chris, in Oklahoma, Wishkno Wakole and wife Justine, Mayetta, and Charli Wakole and husband Kevin, Carmen Wakole and husband Jon and Gonk Wakole and wife Amber, all of Horton; four brothers, Jason Matchie, Topeka, Leland Matchie and Billy Matchie, both of Mayetta, and Mark Matchie, Topeka; 30 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be held Friday evening at Ma-wah-quah’s, 15320 Q Rd., Mayetta, KS 66509. Drum services will be held Saturday evening, Dec. 28 at the Danceground Building. Burial will be held Sunday afternoon at Danceground Cemetery. Mercer Funeral Home in Holton is in charge of arrangements.
