Dan McKinney 1938-2018
Dan “Ke-so-kwah” McKinney, 80, Soldier, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, at his home.
He was born Sept. 12, 1938, on the Potawatomi Reservation, the son of Dan McKinney Sr. and Ellen Lewis McKinney.
Mr. McKinney was a firefighter for many years on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation.
He was a member of Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and Peyote Religion.
He married Ellen Fair in August 1969 in Carnegie, Okla. She survives.
Other survivors include five sons, Troy McKinney and wife Amber, Mayetta, and Sam McKinney and wife Rachel, Phillip McKinney, James McKinney and Dan McKinney Jr. III and wife Virginia, all of Soldier; two daughters, Mona McKinney and husband David, Soldier, and Lola Wilson, Topeka; two sisters, Betty Jo Hugar and husband Charles, Apache, Okla., and Donna Poore and husband Tyrone, Ponca City, Okla.; a brother, Danny Boy McKinney, in Oklahoma; 29 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jack McKinney; four sisters; and four brothers.
Family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Cremation will follow. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
