Charlie Richter 1940-2020

Charles Frederick “Charlie” Richter, 79, of Circleville, passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2020, at Community Hospital in Onaga.

He was born June 30, 1940, in Blue Rapids, the son of Marvin E. and Hilda Sophia (Strauss) Richter.

Charlie graduated from Circleville High School in 1958 and had attended a trade school. He had worked for Santa Fe Railroad, Archer Daniels Midland and Henry Manufacturing in Topeka. Charles retired from Goodyear Tire Company after 38 years. 

He was a member of Circleville Christian Church, Recreation Club in Circleville, Circleville City Council for 40-plus years and Local Union #307.

Charlie enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play sports and he also coached Little League and Pony League baseball. He attended as many sporting events as possible, especially The University of Kansas Jayhawks, Washburn University and Kansas City Royals games. Other favorite teams were the Boston Celtics, Washington Redskins and Kansas City Chiefs. Most of all, he was proud to be a Cobra and attended all the grandkids’ games at Jackson Heights schools.

Charlie enjoyed gardening and woodworking, where he could always be found in his basement workshop. He would build Christmas decorations and furniture for his grandkids. He always had a love for Elvis, he collected his memorabilia and still enjoyed listening to his music and watching his movies.

Charlie married Connie Kaye Beamand on Sept. 1, 1962, in Miami, Okla. They celebrated more than 57 years of marriage. 

Survivors include his wife, Connie Richter, of the home, a son, Pat Richter (Kristie) of Holton; a daughter, Gena Smith (Terry) of Whiting; nine grandchildren, Gera Cochren, Jordan Smith, Tanner Smith, Jaimon Richter, Preston Richter, Zane Richter, Kayden Richter, Phoenix Richter and Kassidy Fisher; and nine great-grandchildren, Dawson, Chesnea and Kane Cochren, Keatan and Kinsley Smith, Serina Richter, Jazelynn and Watson Richter and Jasper Smith. 

He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Ann Richter; two half-brothers, Wayne and Jack Richter; and a great-grandson, Maverick Richter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 4 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in Holton Cemetery. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time. Family requests favorite sports team for attire.
