Charles Jewell 1932-2018

Charles Patrick Jewell, 85, Mayetta, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, at the VA Hospital in Topeka.

He was born March 23, 1932, in Lincoln, the son of Charles Milton and Vaughn Hazel McCormick Jewell. He attended schools in Lincoln and Farmington and was a longtime resident of Mayetta.

Mr. Jewell served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, serving in Japan, China, the Philippines and Korea. On June 25, 2000, he was awarded the 50-year South Korean pin from Randolph Air Force Base. In his early years, he farmed and worked for Jackson County as a road grader operator. He later worked for Lutz Construction and Wildcat Construction, where he retired.

He was a member of Mayetta Christian Church, Holton VFW Post #1367 and a member of Holton American Legion Post 44.

He married Colene Watts on Aug. 25, 1954, in Hiawatha. They were married 60 years when she died May 11, 2015. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Katherine McGee, Carrie Schroeder, Nellie Coloff and Ruth Ann Hittle; and five brothers, Denny, Ray, Jim, John and Bill Jewell.

Survivors include two sisters, Vaughn Kreider, Horton, and Mildred Traphagen, Hoyt; five children, Patsy Jewell, Mayetta, Paula Henry, Hoyt, and Mike Jewell and wife Cindy, Penny Hegemann and husband David and Charles Jewell and wife Lee, all of Mayetta; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Inurnment will follow in Mayetta Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charles Jewell Memorial Fund, to be designated at a later date to the VA Hospital in Topeka and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
