Carol Yazzie 1953-2018

Carol June “Ke-Wada-No-Quah” Yazzie, 65, Horton, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018 at her home on the Kickapoo Reservation.

She was born March 3, 1953 in Horton, the daughter of Leonard McKinney and Melvina Mjessepe Banks. She graduated from Riverside Indian School in Anadarko, Okla., and from Northeast Kansas Vo-Tech in Atchison with a LPN nursing degree. 

Ms. Yazzie worked as a LPN in the Topeka and Lawrence areas for many years before retiring.

She was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribe and the Native American Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Valarie Yazzie and Crystal Wakolee, both of Topeka, and Gloria Yazzie, Horton; three brothers, Michael McKinney, Topeka, Murray “Willie” Banks, Horton, and Jason “Zeke” Banks, Hiawatha; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and six brothers, Larry McKinney, Norris McKinney, Gerald McKinney, Joseph McKinney, Narcissus “Doc” Banks and Maurice Banks.

Native American Church services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Wayne Jessepe’s home on the Kickapoo Reservation. Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in Mason Cemetery on the Kickapoo Reservation. Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary of Horton is in charge of arrangements.
