Bob Layton 1933-2019

Major Robert Frederick Layton, 85, of Denison, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, at Holton Community Hospital.

He was born Oct. 11, 1933, in Baltimore, Md., the son of Robert Edward and Alyce Rae (Schulte) Layton.

Bob lived in the Denison community since 1986 and had previously lived in the Wichita area from 1975 to 1986. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era. Bob served for more 21 years, retiring as Major in 1976. He worked for the State of Kansas for more than 15 years, assisting veterans with employment opportunities. He also served as the Mayor of Denison.

He was a member of Mayetta Christian Church, Holton VFW Post 1367, Holton American Legion Post 44 and the Holton Lions Club.

Bob married Mary Edith Gilliland on Dec. 28, 1955, in Denison. She preceded him in death on July 22, 1999, after more than 43 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William Edward Layton, on April 18, 2009.

Survivors include his caretakers, Fred and Karen Binkley of Denison and Irvin and Meda Scarlett of Gardner; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Inurnment with military honors will follow in Denison Cemetery.
