Betty Scheid 1930-2020

Betty Marie (Cochren) Scheid, 90, of Whiting, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020, at her home with family by her side.

She was born Sept. 10, 1930, in Whiting, the youngest child of Walter W. and Captola Marie (Shannon) Cochren.

Betty graduated from Whiting High School in 1948 and attended both Highland Community College and Benedictine College. She worked for the United States Postal Service as a Postmaster in Robinson, retiring after 22 years.

She was a member of Whiting United Methodist Church and a 60-year member of O.E.S.

Betty and Paul L. Scheid were married on October 3, 1947 in Hiawatha and they celebrated more than 73 years of marriage. Betty loved flowers and spent many hours gardening and redesigning their Whiting home, making it the center of many family gatherings.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Scheid, of the home; two daughters, Paula S. Scheid (Stephen Rosengren) of Topeka and Marcia Jo Scheid Watkins (Galen) of Whiting; son, Mark W. Scheid (Glenda Herl) of Topeka; five grandchildren, Josh Watkins (Erika), Zach Watkins (Cori), Matt Watkins (Kristin), Megan Martin (Anthony) and Jared Herl (Allison); and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, June Henoch and Joy Manion; and two brothers, Wendell Cochren and Bill Cochren.

Due to COVID-19, the graveside service will be attended by immediate family only on Friday, Nov. 20 at Springhill Cemetery in Whiting. For extended family and friends, Betty will lie in state from Tuesday afternoon until 6 p.m. Thursday.
