Betty Hower 1941-2021

Betty Lou Hower, 80, of Whiting, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

She was born Oct. 12, 1941, in Fresno, Calif., the daughter of Jack Curtis and Elsie Faye (Huffman) Higgins.

Betty had lived in the Whiting community since 1985 and previously in California. She was a cosmetologist and owned and operated beauty salons in Campbell, Calif., and Whiting. She also worked for Jackson County Training Center in Holton, C&D Mart in Whiting, Union State Bank in Horton, Golden Eagle Casino and Sac and Fox Casino. While living in California, Betty enjoyed her Bunko groups.

She married Lawrence E. Kaler; they divorced. She married Eldon Dale Hower on March 19, 1978, in Santa Cruz, Calif.; they celebrated more than 43 years of marriage.

Survivors include her husband, Eldon D. Hower, of the home; two daughters, Brenda D. Kaler of Whiting and Tanna Trimell of St. George, Utah; a stepdaughter, Kelly M. Ward (Dan) of Sonora, Calif.; a sister, Thelma Bolin of California; a brother, Jack Higgins of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Christina Kaler of Holton; 10 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Elsie Higgins; a son, Curtis D. Kaler; an infant daughter, Donna Sue Kaler; a sister, Vivian Higgins; a brother, Alan W. Higgins; and two great-grandsons, Bentley and Abel Rupnicki.
