Bertha Hamon 1908-2015

 

Bertha Lina Cook Hamon, 106, Valley Falls, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2015 at Linwood Park in Valley Falls.

She was born Oct. 9, 1908, in the Prairie View community south of Effingham, the daughter of Edwin and Ida Thompson Cook. She at­tended Emporia State Teachers College and Kansas State Univer­sity.

Mrs. Hamon worked as a social worker in Jefferson County.

She was a member of Literary Ramblers, Delaware Valley Quilters and Sunflower Extension Unit. She was also a member of the Coal Creek and Valley Falls United Methodist Churches and numerous other community and church orga­nizations.  

She married John Hamon on May 12, 1934, at her parents’ home in Effingham. He died Oct. 12, 2007. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Orlena Hall; and a brother, Clarence Cook.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Warta and husband Byron, Newton, and Nancy Jo Fasse and husband Harvey, Effing­ham; a son, Charles Hamon and wife Mary Jo, Valley Falls; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchil­dren; and three great-great-grand­children.

Memorial services were held Monday morning at Valley Falls United Methodist Church. Burial was held in Valley Falls Cemetery.
