Arlene Gier 1929-2016
A. Arlene Gier, 87, Valley Falls, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, at Midland Hospice Care in Topeka.
She was born Feb. 13, 1929, near Denison, the daughter of Harold and Grace Ferrell Scarlett. She graduated from Valley Falls High School.
Mrs. Gier was a seamstress and quilter. She also taught in a one-room Jefferson County schoolhouse prior to her marriage and later was a substitute teacher at Valley Falls High School.
She was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church, North Cedar Club and Blue Mound Club.
She married Robert “Bob” Gier, Oct. 9, 1947, at Nortonville. He died in 2007. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Gail Arlene, in infancy; a daughter-in-law, Marian Gier, in April; a grandson, Tom Gier, in 2003; a granddaughter, Liyah Gier, in infancy; two brothers, DeVere and Everett Scarlett; and two sisters, Marilyn Kesinger and Jane Etzel.
Survivors include five children, Richard Gier and wife Sue, Dodge City, Randel Gier, Holton, Ryan Gier and wife Jolene and Marlin Gier and wife Chris, all of Valley Falls, and Jean Carder and husband Doug, Louisburg; four brothers, Marlin Scarlett, Sabetha, Harlin Scarlett and wife Louise and Gary Scarlett and wife Kay, all of Topeka, and John Scarlett and wife Sandy, Wellsville; four sisters, Neola Risinger, Perry, Anita Graham, Meriden, Dodie Bolz, Valley Falls, and Helen Gibson and husband Hoot, in South Dakota; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 in Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.
