Alvie Burns 1937-2015
Alva Neill “Alvie” Burns Jr., 77, Mayetta, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 23, 1937, in Topeka, the son of Alva Neill and Ella Mae Wolfe Burns. He graduated from Seaman High School in 1955 and attended Kansas Wesleyan University. He had lived in the Mayetta community since 1972 and previously in Maple Hill.
Mr. Burns served in the Kansas National Guard for six years. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 40 years, retiring in 1995. He was also a stockman and delivered newspapers for the Topeka Capital-Journal for several years.
He was a member of Mayetta United Methodist Church. He also belonged to the York Rite in Topeka and N.A.R.F.E. He was a 50-year member of Mayetta Masonic Lodge 393, a Mayetta O.E.S. member for 49 years and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Union for more than 50 years.
He married Karen Faye Brenner on June 7, 1959, in Corning. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Daniel Burns and wife Nancy, Horton, and Matthew Burns and wife Rhonda, Topeka; two daughters, Rebecca Neely and husband Tom and Carol Just and husband Allan, all of Topeka; a sister, Marilyn Randel and husband Dean, Topeka; nine grandchildren, Joshua Burns and wife Miriam, Timothy Burns, Helen Stutterheim and husband Ross, Amanda Finch and husband Erik, Rebecca Warnken and husband Adam, James Burns, Aaron Neely, Cordell Neely and Leanna Just; and three great-grandchildren, Raegan, Jocelyn and Autumn Stutterheim.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at Mayetta United Methodist Church with burial following in Mayetta Cemetery.
