Alice Patterson

Alice M. Patterson, Holton, died Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at her home from complications from lymphoma.

She was born at Lancaster, the daughter of H.C. and Martha Poos. She attended grade school in Lancaster and graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham, receiving her teaching certificate during her senior year.

Mrs. Patterson taught in one-room schools at South Creek in Atchison County and at Walnut Creek in Jackson County. She and her husband lived in the Whiting community, then moved to Netawaka, farming for more than 60 years. They moved to Holton after retirement in 1999.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Four Seasons Garden Club. She was also active in 4-H, serving as a director and in other capacities.

She married Joe W. Patterson on Dec. 25, 1942. He died Aug. 4, 2013. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marsha Abarr, on June 27, 2016; a grandson, William Fund, on Oct. 10, 1963; and a brother, Alan Poos on Nov. 27, 2012.

Survivors include four children, Nancy Bower and husband Don, Linda Wenger, Steve Patterson and wife Donna and Sherry Burns and husband Rick; 14 grandchildren, Tammy Caffrey and husband Mark, Donna Lehman and husband Daniel, Marsene Feldt and husband Nate, Charlene Moran and husband Richard, Scott Fund, Joe Fund and wife Andrea, Jennifer Dennon and husband David, Jannelle Welliver and husband Rick, Katie Ingels and husband Kyle, Casey Patterson and wife Kisha, Lyndee Stabel and husband Taylor, Annie Shanholtzer and husband Abe, Dean Burns and wife Ashley and Robyn Jones and husband Jason; 32 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Cara Triplett.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in Holton Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
