Dick Nott 1929-2018

Dick Nott passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, after a hard-fought battle with Parkinson’s disease. He had resided in Enumclaw, Wash., in the last year, a town near his son Terry. 

Dick was born in Soldier on July 23, 1929, to Alba and Ulva Nott. He attended school in Soldier and worked on the family farm. Dick was high-energy and adventurous. Friends and relatives enjoyed telling tales of their exciting and sometimes hair-raising adventures with him.

At the age of 15, he took a motorcycle trip to Southern California with his good friend Jerry Pollack. He eventually returned to Kansas before joining the army. Dick proudly served his country in the Korean War and received a medal for his bravery there. 

After the war, Dick moved to Lebanon, Ore., with his wife Betty Shupe. Their two children, Nena and Randy, were born there. After their divorce, Dick married Judy Gunderson and had twins, Terry and Tess. In 1970, he moved to Nenana, Alaska, and lived there for many years before moving back to Oregon, then Arkansas, and finally to Washington. 

Although Dick worked hard, he made time to enjoy the outdoors. He loved to camp, fish, ski and boat. He was also an award-winning artist. Dick was proud that his three grandchildren, Mandara, Keeper and Alex, inherited his artistic gifts.

Dick was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Lela Cooney, brother Frank Nott and son Randy. He was also preceded in death by Betty, Judy and his partner Linda Dykema. He is survived by Terry, Tess and Nena and their spouses. He is also survived by his grandchildren and cousins Judy Gordon, Bill Nott, Jack Cooney and Ken Cooney.
