Zora Mayes 1940-2018

Zora (Zee) Helen Mayes, the daughter of Omar and Helen Jones, was born Feb. 6, 1940, in Lusk, Wyo., and departed this life on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at the Cherokee County Nursing Home in Tahlequah, Okla., at the age of 78.

Zora grew up in the Welling, Okla. community and attended schools in Welling, Tahlequah and Westville, Okla. She married Don Mayes on Feb. 15, 1957, in Tahlequah, Okla., and then moved to Frankfort, where Don got a teaching position. They later moved to Marysville and then to Holton. Zora worked for Denison State Bank for many years.

They moved back to Welling, Okla., in 1982. She then worked for First State Bank of Tahlequah and also the Bank of Commerce in Stillwell, Okla. Zora loved to read, travel, cook, plant flowers and paint. She enjoyed seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Zora is survived by her husband, Don Mayes, of the home; two children, Don Mayes Jr. in Florida and Twila White of Holton; four grandchildren, Devin White and wife Angela of Whiting, Jeremy White and wife Amber of Topeka, and Trey Mayes and Megan Mayes of Hagerstown, Md.; and four great-grandchildren, Gracie, Ellie, Parker and Braxton White.

Services for Zora were held Friday, May 18 at Hart Funeral Chapel in Tahlequah, Okla., and she was laid to rest in Proctor Cemetery, Proctor, Okla.
