Holton extends electric contract

An updated contract for the purchase of electric power may provide the City of Holton with a minimal savings that likely won’t affect how much the city’s utility customers pay monthly for power — but there’s a possibility that the city may save some money on the power it purchases in the long run.

During the Holton City Commission’s regular meeting on Monday, commissioners approved the extension of a contract through which the city and the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency will purchase electric power from Juno Beach, Fla.-based NextEra Energy Marketing through Dec. 31, 2027, fixing the cost at $25.72 per megawatt hour for the duration of the contract.

The city and KMEA had entered into a contract in December of 2016 to purchase 0.6 megawatts from NextEra at a cost of $25.79 per megawatt hour, with the contract to end on Dec. 31, 2021, Holton City Manager Kerwin McKee noted.
