Help offered to prepare for boards

K-State Research and Extension will conduct a web-based series of Board Leadership workshops across the state this coming February, it has been reported.

Designed to provide basic training for members of community-based boards, the series will be hosted by local Extension Offices across the state.

Site locations in the Meadowlark Extension District will be the Glacial Hills Business Center in Sabetha and the lower level meeting room at the Jackson County Courthouse in Holton.

The 2018 series dates and topics will include:

• Feb. 6: Conducting effective meetings and roles and responsibilities of board members, basics of parliamentary procedure and strategies to make meetings more productive.

• Feb. 13: Understanding fellow board members and conflict management, explore how personalities and generational differences affect the decision-making process and learn how to manage conflict in a way that is productive, not destructive, to the board.

• Feb. 20: Fund-raising, fund management, legalities and ethics, explore board options for raising and managing money and understanding such things as articles of incorporation, bylaws and policies.

• Feb. 27: Strategic planning, learn about establishing a common mission and vision for the board and how to plan priorities for the future.

All sessions will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each week.

Workshop participants will meet at host sites throughout the state to take part in this web based instruction and locally facilitated discussion.

Site location for the series is dependent on enrollment and interest. One registration holds a seat for all four sessions and can be rotated by participants.

Registration is required by Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, and will include refreshments and reference handouts.

Contact David Key at the Meadowlark Extension District Office in Seneca at 785-336-2184 or dkey@ksu.edu.

If you have an interest in serving your community on volunteer boards, these leadership sessions will be great training and well-worth the time and effort!
