County commission discusses Banner hay agreements

As new hay land rental agreements are being renewed for land at Banner Creek Reservoir, the Jackson County Commissioners and John Kennedy, Banner Creek Reservoir director, are looking into renegotiating all of the contracts.

“We have some land that is $10 to $15 an acre and some as high as $30.50 an acre,” Kennedy told commissioners recently.

The county has rented hay land to area residents for many years, but it was noted that the price per acre varies largely from contract to contract. Acres rented also vary from 12 to 60 acres per person on an annual contract.

Commissioner Rob Ladner noted that some of the rented land is easier to access than others and that the price and time of someone hauling in their equipment to cut a few acres has to be considered when prices are set.

The commissioners and Kennedy said they plan to continue to discuss the contracts.
