St. Marys man killed in accident on PBP reservation

A 23-year-old St. Marys man died as the result of a one-vehicle accident Wednesday evening on 134th Road on the Prairie Band Potawatomi reservation, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. that day, KHP reports that Artak Nicholas McCarthy was traveling westbound on 134th Road, about three and a half miles west of U.S. Highway 75, when he lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons.

McCarthy’s 1993 Honda left the road to the south, striking some trees. He was pronounced dead at the scenc, according to KHP.

Prairie Band Tribal Police were the first to respond to the scene, and the investigation has since been turned over to KHP.

There were no passengers in the vehicle, and KHP reports that McCarthy was not wearing his seatbelt when the accident occurred. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
