Second Saturday event to feature jazz musician
The Holton Square will be ‘jumpin’ this Saturday with a performance by blues and jazz musician Kelley Hunt. Hunt’s performance at Complete Chiropractic Care Event Center is part of the Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce’s upcoming “Second Saturday” promotion, set for 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in downtown Holton.
The theme for this month’s “Second Saturday” promotion is “The January Jump” and will also include shopping specials at several downtown stores, as well as a volunteer fair for residents looking for ways to serve their community in 2015.
Kansas City-based musician Kelley Hunt will cap off the monthly promotion will a concert from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Complete Chiropractic on the east side of the Square. Tickets are $20 and will be sold at the door. A cash bar will also be available.
The singer-songwriter has released five albums, with her sixth to be completed in May. She has performed more than 1,500 times in North America and at international festivals. She has appeared six times on American Public Media’s “A Prairie Home Companion.”
Her latest CD, “Gravity Loves You,” has won praises from many critics.
“Kelley Hunt delivers the goods with a voice that grafts passionate blues to scorching soul – instantly endearing her to all within earshot, as her band surrounds her in a greasy funk that completed the package and brings you back for more. ‘Gravity Loves You’ continues this tasty tradition and ups the ante once again,” according to Eric Thom of “Blue Revue.”
Businesses around the Holton Square will be open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. that evening including JM Sewing Center, Penny’s, Sarah’s Enchanted Cottage, Koger Variety, The Hotspot, The Gossip, Uptown Treasures, Bandita’s Western Barn, Complete Chiropractic Care Center, expressions, Quilting on the Square, Heart to Home and Famertown Antiques, which is located on U.S. Highway 75 next to Trails Café.
Visitors to the Square that evening are encouraged to visit five different retailers and get a special card “punched” from each business. Cards with at least five punches will be eligible for $200 in Chamber Bucks, it was noted.
The drawing for the prize will be held at 5th Street Sandwich Shoppe on the north side of the Square at 7:30 p.m. The restaurant will also be offering hors d’oeuvres and wine samples starting at 5:30 p.m.
County residents looking for ways to be involved in their community this year can visit the all-county volunteer fair at the Hutchins Building that evening. Sponsored by Holton Community Hospital, the fair will include information and booths from a variety of organizations and clubs that are seeking volunteers this year.
