School shooting has local administrators reviewing security

The recent mass shooting at a south Florida high school that left 17 people dead — mostly students — has Jackson County school officials taking action to ensure that a similar situation does not occur at their schools.

Holton USD 336 Superintendent Bob Davies, Royal Valley USD 337 Superintendent Aaric Davis and Jackson Heights USD 335 Superintendent Adrianne Walsh all said security measures are in place and periodic “lockdown drills” and other security drills are conducted at their respective schools.

But when incidents such as the shooting that occurred shortly before the end of the day on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the Miami suburb of Parkland, Fla., take place, questions arise regarding whether enough is being done to protect students and staff at the county’s schools.

All three Jackson County school districts have some kind of documented crisis plan in place to handle various situations in which students could be placed in danger, it was reported. The districts also have been working with Jackson County School Resource Officer John Calvert to strengthen security measures at individual school buildings.
