Roberts to visit HHS Thursday

U.S. Senator and Holton High School alumnus Pat Roberts will be returning to his alma mater on Thursday for a school lunch, it was reported.

Sen. Roberts’ state schedule for the Presidents Day recess will include a Thursday morning stop at HHS to meet with a “focus group” of students from the school’s student council to get input on children’s nutrition programs that are set to be reauthorized this year, according to Roberts spokeswoman Sarah Little.

Following the meeting with the HHS focus group, Little said the senator will eat lunch with students at the school from which he graduated in 1954.

It was reported that Roberts announced in late January that he would dine at school cafeterias in preparation for the reauthorization later this year of a child nutrition law that sets school meal standards. Roberts, it was reported, wants to change that law.

As Senate Agriculture Chairman, Roberts has stated that a committee he is involved with intends to reauthorize the 2010 child nutrition law that has received mixed reviews for overhauling nutrition standards for foods — including those sold in vending machines — on school grounds.

The senator recently had lunch with students in the Mill Valley school district in Shawnee in preparation for the reauthorization work, Little said.

“He wants to eat at urban and rural schools and taste the school lunch firsthand,” she added.

Roberts’ state schedule for the Presidents Day recess also includes visits to Edgerton, Topeka, Kansas City, Dodge City and Wichita, it was reported.
