Potawatomi tribe plans summer elections

 

An election will be held this summer on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation to elect several candidates to the PBPN Tribal Council and the PBPN Ethics Commission, it has been announced.

Eligible candidates can begin filing for one of the eight positions today at the government center on the reservation. The last day to file is April 29.

Positions that will be included on the summer ballot are:

* Tribal Council Vice Chair, currently being held by Joyce Guerrero.

* Tribal Council Treasurer, currently being held by Hattie Mitchell.

* Tribal Council Person #2, currently being held by Thomas Wabnum.

* Tribal Council Person #3, currently being held by Carrie O’Toole.

* Ethics Commission Chair (currently vacant).

* Ethics Commissioner #1 (currently vacant).

* Ethics Commissioner #2 (currently vacant).

* Ethics Commissioner #3 (currently vacant).

The filing fee to run for a Tribal Council seat is $150, and the fee to file for the Ethics Commission is $50, it was noted.

The PBPN Tribal Council is a seven-member board with staggered four-year terms. The PBPN Ethics Commission is a six-member board with staggered three-year terms.

The last day to register to vote in the election is Friday, May 20.

To qualify to vote in the election, a person must be an enrolled member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, be 18 years of age or older and have a voter registration form on file with the PBP election board.

More than 850 people are eligible to vote in tribal elections, it was reported.

An informal forum with all the Tribal Council candidates is set to be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 4.

Ballots will be mailed to all Tribal voters on Friday, June 10. The completed ballots will be counted on Saturday, July 23. Candidates must win by a majority vote.

If one candidate does not receive the majority vote for one of the open positions, a run-off election will be held, with votes counted on Saturday, Aug. 20, it was reported.
