Netawaka placed on water boil advisory

Netawaka city water customers are facing a boil water advisory for at least the next two months, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, which issued the advisory on Thursday.

KDHE officials said the city’s public water supply has been placed under advisory because of a water line repair project resulting in repeated losses of pressure. Failure to maintain adequate water pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination, it was reported.

The advisory is expected to remain in effect for the duration of the line repair project, which is estimated to take two to three months to complete, or until KDHE determines that conditions that place the water system at risk of contamination have been adequately resolved.

Because of the advisory, KDHE is asking Netawaka water customers to take the following precautions until the advisory is lifted:

• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation, or use bottled water.

• Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from an automatic icemaker.

• Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

• Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

• If tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
