HHS spirit squad raising funds for cancer society

The Holton High School spirit squad is giving away 12 baskets of goodies and prizes in an effort to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, it has been announced.

Members of the squad are selling tickets as part of a drawing for the baskets on Friday during halftime of the high school football game against Royal Valley, according to Erynn Ireland, HHS senior.

Tickets are $1 a piece, $5 for six or $10 for 12 tickets. You don’t have to be present at halftime to win a basket, Ireland said.

Each basket has a theme, and Ireland noted that there is a “Cancer Survivor” basket full of pink items, a Holton basket featuring local restaurants, a baking basket, a car care basket and more.

Some area business owners donated baskets for the drawing while others donated funds so items could be purchased, she said.

“Our goal is to raise $1,000,” Ireland said. “All the members of our spirit squad have been affected by cancer in some way.”

The funds from the drawing will be donated to the Topeka Cancer Society, which will then allocate the funds for use in Jackson County.

“The center provides grief counseling, wigs and other services for those affected by cancer,” Ireland said.

Tickets for the drawing will continue to be sold throughout the week by spirit squad members, as well as before the high school football game in Holton Friday evening.
