HCH schedules health fair during Glory Days activities

Holton Community Hospital will  be hosting a health fair on Saturday, May 28, during Glory Days around the Holton Square.

The event includes a 5K run, a bike rodeo and several “stations” around the Square with a variety of activities for adults and children.

The 5K run and one-mile walk will begin at 8 a.m. from Kellerman Real Estate on the southeast side of the Holton Square. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. and is $25 per person. Proceeds from the event will benefit the HCH Auxiliary.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., people are encouraged to visit health fair stations set up on each side of the Square. The stations include:

South Side

* A welcome center at Home Health & Hospice, 129 W. Fourth St.

* Diane’s Relaxation Station, located just south of Kellerman Real Estate. Adults will be able to dip their hands in paraffin wax and participate in “Strong Man” and “Strong Women” contests, which will be measured by grip strength. A balance obstacle course will also be held for children at this stop.

North Side

*Colberg’s Pit Stop is in the back room of Dick Lake’s Law Office, 110 W. Fifth St. Samples and information regarding dental health and stress reduction will be provided here. Adult coloring will be available in addition to face painting for kids.

* A safety station will be held in the parking lot on the west side of the Jackson County Courthouse. IdentAKid, a child identification program, will be available for parents. Law enforcement will be available to fingerprint children so parents can have the records on file for future use. Hands-only CPR lessons will also be provided. The fire department will also be giving out free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

* Malia’s Shoe Tree Diner in front of J&M Sewing Center, 405 New York Ave. Food labeling information will be available, as well as healthy snacks.

In addition, a bike safety clinic and rodeo will be held at Joel’s Drive-In, will be held at Eubanks Custom Woodworks and Clark Chevrolet parking lots located just off the southwest corner of the Square.

The clinic and rodeo are being sponsored by Gus Suarez of State Farm Insurance of Holton, the Holton Police Department, the Holton Rotary Club and Holton High School SAFE and SADD clubs.

Kids in first through fifth grades are asked to bring their bicycles and their helmets that day to have them inspected and to be used in a variety of obstacle courses.

Free bicycle helmets will be given away to the first 50 kids, and the event will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

Tammy Elliott of Holton Community hospital said that information on individual hospital health care providers will be available at each stop.

“The hospital hasn’t held a health fair in many years,” Elliott said. “We want people to walk around the Holton Square to increase traffic for businesses and to help people out of town learn more about the hospital.”

The names of adults who attend all six of the main health care stations will be entered into a drawing for a variety of prizes, including a Fitbit, a six-month membership to the Netawaka Fitness Center and Nike sunglasses.
