Halloween events set for this weekend

Halloween is this weekend, and there are a variety of opportunities for area children to dress up and receive candy from local businesses and residents.

Halloween activities will kick off in Holton at 2 p.m. Friday with the annual Halloween parade by Central and Colorado Elementary School children. The students will parade around the Square in their costumes at that time.

Then from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., all area children are invited to go trick or treating at 44 businesses and organizations participating in a downtown Halloween event on the Square. Participating business will have an orange pumpkin sign hanging on their front door or window.

While most of the businesses participating are located around the Square, a few - Jackson County EMS, Holton Police Department, Beck-Bookman Library, Giant Communications and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office – are also involved in the event.

Also on Friday, candy will be handed out to trick-o-treaters from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Medicalodges Jackson County, 1121 W. 7th St. in Holton.

Also on Saturday, residents at Vintage Park will be handing out candy at the facility, 410 Juniper Dr. in Holton, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Pines, 725 Iowa Ave. in Holton, is hosting a Halloween costume contest for children and pets on Saturday. The contest is being held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

Also on Saturday, members of Holton Middle School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be going door to door collecting non-perishable food items for the Jackson County Ministerial Alliance food pantry.

Local residents are encouraged to stock up on canned or boxed foods in order to participate in this special event.

For children and parents visiting local neighborhoods for trick or treating, it is recommended that costumes fit children well, are flame retardant and do not obscure visibility.

Children are also encouraged to wear reflective clothing and carry a light or glow stick.

Children should also be reminded to stay in well-lit areas and not take shortcuts or go into isolated areas.
