Funds being collected for local state trooper

Funds are being collected for Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Ramirez and his family, who lost their home in a fire earlier this month near Delia.

A late evening fire Jan. 8 destroyed the family’s log cabin home at 7466 106th Rd. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse said it was likely caused by a wood-burning stove.

Ramirez is a trooper based out of Jackson County, and several fund-raisers have been held to help the family. AJ’s New York Pizzeria in Topeka is donating 10 percent of the proceeds from its sales today (Monday) to the family. The restaurant is also expected to make a donation on top of the proceeds.

Earlier this month, the Soldier Fire Department held a soup supper, with half of the proceeds benefiting the Ramirez family.

Donations for the family are also being collected at the Jackson County Sheriff's Office. Checks can be mailed to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, 210 U.S. Highway 75, Holton, Kansas 66436.
