Deadline to file for election approaching

The filing deadline for residents who are seeking election to local, state or federal offices in the 2016 elections is noon on Wednesday, June 1, it has been reported. 

The state’s primary election has been set for Aug. 2, and potential candidates have one week left to file.   

Candidates can file by either paying a fee or by petition, which requires candidates to obtain a certain number of signatures from members of the same political party. 

Once the primary election is complete, candidates with the most votes in their political party will advance to the general election, which is set for Nov. 8. 

Registered voters in Jackson County also have until noon on June 1 to change their political party affiliation, it was reported. Voters who want to switch parties may do so by visiting the Jackson County Clerk’s Office, which is located on the second floor of the Jackson County Courthouse.

The following is a list of candidates who have already filed for the primary election: 

U.S. Senate

* Jerry Moran (Incumbent Rep.), Monique Singh (Dem.) and Patrick Wiesner (Dem.).

U.S. Representative

 Second District

* Lynn Jenkins (Incumbent Rep.), Britani Potter (Dem.) and Mike Pryor (Dem.).

State Senate – First District

* Jerry Henry (Dem.)

State Representative 

61st District 

* Dan Brenner (Rep.), Francis Awerkamp (Rep.) and Lauren Van Wagoner (Dem.).

State Representative 

62nd District

* Randy Garber (Incumbent Rep.).

State Board of Education 

Sixth District

* Deena Horst (Incumbent Rep.).

Jackson County Commissioner Second District

* Janet Zwonitzer (Incumbent Rep.).

Jackson County Commissioner Third District

* Bill Elmer (Incumbent Dem.).

The commissioners serve as the governing body of the county government. They set the county budget and levy county taxes. They also oversee all the county departments. 

Jackson County Clerk

* Kathy Mick (Incumbent Rep.).

The clerk serves as the clerk to the county commissioners and is in charge of budgets, taxes, human resources, elections and other responsibilities. 

Jackson County Treasurer

* Linda Gerhardt (Incumbent Rep.).

The treasurer oversees payments for driver’s licenses, motor vehicles and property taxes.

Jackson County Register of Deeds

* Tammy Moulden (Incumbent Dem.). 

The register of deeds records and maintains all transactions relating to real estate in Jackson County. This includes deeds, mortgages, oil and gas leases and platted additions to all cities in the county.

Jackson County Attorney

* Shawna Miller (Incumbent Rep.). 

The elected attorney is responsible for prosecuting a variety of crimes that have occurred in the county. The position also serves as counsel for the Jackson County Commission.

Jackson County Sheriff

* Tim Morse (Incumbent Dem.) and Bob McNicholas (Rep.).

The sheriff oversees the patrol division, the Jackson County Jail, the dispatch center and all county investigations.

Each voter will also be asked to vote for one woman and one man for local precinct committeeman and committeewoman positions, as well as one candidate for township trustee in each township and one candidate for township treasurer in each township.
