Cundell excelling on the racetrack
By day, Evan Cundell is a seventh-grade student at Holton Middle School who enjoys playing football with his friends.
On weekends, Cundell likes to climb into a “quarter midget” race car and hit the Topeka Kansas Quarter Midget Association track, where he’s racing his way to a points championship in the “Heavy 160” division.
“Evan has been on a roll,” said his stepfather, Dan Canady. “He’s picked up his 10th win of the year, and he locked down his first championship in his first full year of being out of the novice class.”
Evan said he got started in racing “quarter midgets” — race cars actually about half the size of a regular “midget” race car — at the beginning of 2016.
“My dad traded his modified (stock racing car) so I could get a quarter midget,” he said.
Since then, he has participated in the senior novice and senior Honda divisions. He currently races in the Heavy 160 and Heavy Honda divisions at the TKQMA track, but has also picked up a pair of victories this year at the I-70 QMA track in Greenville, Ill.
