Community band concert, fireworks set for July 3 at Banner

A concert by the Jackson County Community Band followed by a fireworks show is being planned for Friday, July 3, at Banner Creek Reservoir, just west of Holton.

The band is set to perform at 8 p.m. at the chapel on the north side of the reservoir. The 40-minute concert will include a variety of patriotic numbers including “American Patrol,” “National Emblem March” and a twist on “America the Beautiful” called “Rockin’ America,” according to Jayme Malsom, Holton band director and community band organizer.

A children’s march will also be held that gives children the opportunity to wave an American flag and march around the crowd as the band plays.

Laura Holliday, Jackson Heights band director, is set to direct the community band that evening.

After the concert when the sky gets dark, a fireworks show will be held by 2 Kirks Fireworks, which is owned by Kirk Miller and Kirk Miller Jr. The show is expected to last 20 minutes.

Both the band concert and the fireworks show are free events, but donations are needed to cover the cost of the fireworks and will be accepted at both the north and south gates for the fireworks starting at 4 p.m., according to Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce representatives.
