City hopeful for addition of slide at swimming pool

If a water slide were to be added at Holton’s municipal swimming pool, it wouldn’t be as simple as putting up a slide next to the pool and fastening it to the concrete, Holton Parks and Recreation Director Mike Reichle said.

Still, Reichle is hopeful that a slide of some kind could be added at the 80-year-old swimming pool at some point in the future, whether the City of Holton could find some room in its budget for the addition of a slide or Holton area residents take up a fund-raising drive.

“We’re getting obsolete in our swimming pool here,” Reichle said, noting that smaller communities such as Onaga and Valley Falls have installed water slides at their municipal swimming pools.

The subject of putting in a water slide at the Holton pool came up at a the Holton City Commission’s March 5 meeting, where Holton Mayor Robert Dieckmann asked Reichle if installation of a slide at the city pool was possible. Reichle told Dieckmann he was interested in installing a slide at the pool, but with the cost of painting and maintaining the pool, he added, “budget is everything.”
